interesting the different expectations we have from governments and their role in solving our problems. i still think a dynamic obama figure in the opposition would attract enough support to pose a threat to the ruling party, unfortunately the system seems to give us candidates who toe the line.

I know very well what you mean - and I think it is some of all of these things. Peer pressure can be either restrictive or permissive. In the US, for me it's restrictive on smoking but not necessarily on drinking. In Kinshasa, it's less restrictive on smoking, but because it's such a small work community for me, I find it less permissive on drinking.

I was commissioned by two friends to buy a pack of rubbers when we all were around 13. We divided up the three-pack and there that little latex wonder languished in my wallet, "just in case," for years. For me, it wasn't an embarrassing experience, but I grew up in a big city and anonymity was easy to come by. Three cheers for the rubber trees!

Fletcher, I'm not sure you understand the inherent satirical nature of this post. You might want to put it in context of the larger blog before you make accusations and suggest that one ought to stay home rather than comment on the world. Is vocalism and commentary not at the heart of freedom and democracy?

this is very stereotypical and not true. you should learn to tell the truth if you really care about the countries that you go to visit. I come from Malawi and what you have said about my country is nothing short of trash. there are so many positive and progressive things that could have been mentioned about Malawi and Africa. please, stop this nonsense and stay in your own countries if you are not prepared to appreciate the positive development taking root in Africa.
